The Datasat platform allows us to respond to the changing market for cinema sound. New developments can be accommodated easily meaning there is no need for a ‘rip and replace’ strategy with Datasat products.

This is possible because the platform is not a basic feature set to be expanded upon. It is a comprehensive feature set that can take up to three or four separate devices from other manufacturers to achieve even similar results.

Flexibility

In many cases, the total number of digital and analog inputs and outputs available with Datasat audio processors are almost double that of competitive solutions. The combination of a wide array of memory presets within the platform means that you can provide the best quality sound regardless of the sound set-up in your theater. In addition, the platform is ready for the more channel-hungry developments – such as 3D audio – which are becoming increasingly important for cinemas worldwide.

Control

Essential to the Datasat platform is the features that deliver granular control to the sound engineer. From room optimization to advanced equalization, every element of the sound and how it will be reproduced within your theater is at your fingertips. Many features – such as impulse response control or treble and bass management – can be controlled on a ‘per speaker’ or ‘per channel’ basis. In essence, the ability to route inputs through a matrix is extremely important. In difficult environments – such as speakers below a balcony – you require different equalizations and delay settings for each speaker. The answer is to route the input channel through two completely separate equalization chains. In addition, you have the flexibility to manage the Datasat audio processor in the way that best suits you, from touch screen control to direct Ethernet connection to wireless control through an iPad or smartphone.

Business focus

We all know that margins within the cinema industry are incredibly tight. Competitive advantage can come from two key elements. First, the ability to deliver the best viewing and listening experience. As cinemas embrace digital, the Datasat platform allows the theater to transition from the traditional 5.1 surround to the more advanced sound formats that are beginning to emerge. Secondly, alternative content can provide attractive new revenue streams but only if the the cinema can accommodate the content type and deliver the optimum listening experience for each content type without having to re-tune the space every time the content changes. Consumer formats such as DTS® or Dolby® are accommodated via HDMI 1.3 or 1.4a. Comprehensive memory presets within the Datasat platform make this easily achievable.

Future proofing

Today, the minimum requirement for a cinema audio processor is 8 channels of input and output. This is acceptable for standard 5.1 surround sound but consumer formats have quickly advanced to 7.1 and 11.1. These will require 16 channel solutions. The Datasat platform offers a transition path from 8 channels to 16 channels and beyond to 24 channels through expansion slots that make the process possible through simple software and channel upgrades.
