Datasat Digital Sound

Datasat Digital Sound is a digital surround sound format for use with 35mm movie productions. Today, Hollywood studios and movie makers across the globe license our sound technology on their releases.

Datasat Digital Sound

We provide a one-stop solution for delivering digital soundtracks in Datasat Digital Sound. This includes:

  • Placement of Datasat time codec on the 35mm print
  • Digital mastering of the original soundtrack
  • Synchronization of sound file to the Datasat time codec
  • Addition of optional access features such as captioning or audio description
  • Delivery of sound file on CD-ROM

Datasat Digital Sound is compressed on a 4.1 ratio, which requires less compression than alternative surround sound formats for 35mm film. This results in smaller amounts of data loss and greater audio fidelity.

Today, over 30,000 cinemas worldwide support Datasat Digital Sound for the truest and most natural cinema sound reproduction.

The RS20i is a professional sound solution. Once configured, it is easy to manage with all the power of a cinema audio processor available at your fingertips through your smartphone, iPad or laptop.

Datasat’s entrance into the high end consumer market is a natural progression based upon its many years in the professional cinema market.

Access Solutions

Datasat Digital Entertainment has removed the need for a ‘hard captioned’ print where the captioning is overlaid on the physical 35mm film. Instead, captions can be projected onto the screen using a standard print. Captions come on a separate CD-ROM from the Datasat soundtrack and use the Datasat codec to ensure the captions synchronize exactly with the movie.

In addition, Datasat supports the Rear Window Captioning System from WGBH. With Rear Window Captioning, hearing impaired cinema-goers can view the caption on a transparent acrylic panel. This allows the panel user to see the captions while others are not disturbed by captions on the actual movie screen.

Providing access for the blind and partially sighted, audio description allows the user to hear a full narrative of the movie through infrared headphones. Characters are described, visual jokes explained and body language is outlined in the narrative. In addition, all the original dialog and effects are heard through the headphones.

The audio description is supplied as a separate CD-ROM and uses the Datasat time codec to synchronize it to the movie visuals.

Special Venue

The 70mm print format has always been known for its high resolution, high quality images. Only Datasat Digital Sound can bring that same high resolution to digital sound. We can play up to 16 channels of digital sound for 70mm prints in 5 perf, 8 perf and 15 perf variants.

Although declining within movie theaters, large format prints – along with motion-based ride films – are still active in theme parks and museums. Datasat Digital Entertainment offers cost-effective digital surround sound for special venues such as theaters, restaurants, road shows and exhibitions.
